Fight Club - Mother Jones
posted: September 18, 2012

It feels like bandwagon jumping, posting my cover illustration for this month's Mother Jones, but it's really just serendipity that I can hang on to MJ's coattails while they do a victory lap. When Tim Luddy called me in August to commission this cover (as I was packing the car for a vacation) the issue was about the financial underdogs fighting back against monied interests. Who knew that the most viscious uppercut against the GOP's hopes to regain the oval office would come from none other than Mitt Romney himself. Just when I say I hate politics, throw my hands in the air and begin to walk away, great entertainers like Mitt Romney come along and I slowly lower myself back into the chair and lean forward smiling. What will he do next? I can't wait to find out.

After Tim and I talked through what needed to be done he sent me the above image as an example of where they wanted the cover to go. We agreed that this image was a bit too gruesome, but liked the spirit of it. By the way, this Bloomberg Businessweek cover never ran, but it's far more well known than the one that did.

As always, thanks to Tim Luddy and the staff at Mother Jones.

Good cover Dale. I particularly like the head with the streaking and staining of the copper. As a person who did a little time in the ring, it's always driven me a bit crazy when people ask me to paint a boxer in the ring with a purple eye. It turns purple a day after a fight. Like that Bloomberg cover; a complete 3rd day black eye with fresh blood. Of course, no one cares as it only makes the point if an eye is black or dark blue. Sad that I'm an expert in shiners.

Why does this excellent cover only have one comment? Great work, Dale!

Tim, thanks. I thought a good deal about the shiner. at first I had it just swollen and a little red/pink, but purple just reads better. Just throw that in the old "Don't let the truth get in the way of a good story" approach to illustration. Drawger, not sure who you are, but thanks!

I've been wanting to comment since you posted but I have such affection for the Lady in the Harbor that it's tough to see her sporting a shiner and a fat lip. Otherwise, great job, Dale!

Nice cover, Dale. It's hard to take a cliche like lady liberty and do it this well. The swollen lip is a nice touch.

I love that facial expression and fat lip!

I kind of like Lady Liberty with her ass kicked, thanks Dale, and nice job. It reminds me of a piece I did in college, similar assignment I think, America tarnished.

Terrific, Dale! What a strong cover

I enjoy the way you've given her a real expression within the bruises on her face. Solid cover.

Lady Liberty goes Rocky on the GOP! Great work here Dale! Glad you went with the purple on the shiner... Definitely reads better for the viewer!
